Walter, Margaret, Katie and I got tickets to a meaningless late season Cubs/Pirates game in 1988. Glenn Wilson of the Pirates tossed Margaret a ball and we got our picture with him.
But that wasn't the most exciting part of our day.
We noticed that there was a lot of security around and also that there were snipers on the roof. President Ronald Reagan was in town and the rumors were flying around that he may come to the Cubs game. (no twitter to confirm)
He did come to the game and threw out the first pitch.
I figured that he would also want to do an inning of play-by-play since he used to do radio broadcasts before getting into acting. In those days there was only one path to the broadcast booth and it was a ramp behind the third base line. There was a sparse crowd, so we made our way to the back row and waited with no one sitting anywhere near us. In the 2nd inning some security came to us and asked us to move down at least 5 rows...we did. A few minutes later the President of the United States walked by...I turned around and yelled, "Hi Ron!"
He stopped in his tracks while several Secret Service Agents nervously looked at me struggling to get a camera in place....I said...."just a camera" and took another "shot" as Reagan gave me a wave.
Unfortunately the sun was very bright that day and made my picture less than perfect, but it was a nice encounter. I asked Katie today for her thoughts on the day since she was in Peoria today to celebrate the anniversary with me....She stated, "I can't remember back 25 years."
