Race of the Century

Every four (or so) years, the greatest athletes from around the globe assemble in a spirit of friendly competition to compete on the most prominent stage in all of sports.  Last weekend in Plainfield the family was treated to a display of high majestic athleticism as Katie "Can't Swim" Hanley faced off against reigning world champion, Bill Hanley in that great test of endurance, the 5-Meter Medley.

Many of you were unable to get to witness this dramatic face-off, but luckily Youtube sent some cameras to the pool, and NBC produced this highlight reel from the tape:

The official results are currently pending the review of an international panel of judges at The Hague.  There is some dispute over whether in-water events require the participants to actually swim.  Expect an update to the Newsletter when that ruling is handed down.

  1. Why was my dad considered China?

I think both of them are going to be disqualified... From the Fédération Internationale de Natation rulebook:

SW 10.5 Standing on the bottom during freestyle events or during the freestyle portion of medley events shall not disqualify a swimmer, but he shall not walk.

    1. It may have looked like I was walking but I was actually kicking my feet. It is a new swim style I invented where it looks like your feet are touching the ground but they actually aren't.

  2. Jimmer, that doesn't say anything about "she shall not walk," so I'd say Katie is in the clear either way.
